Should My Cleveland Home Use an Inside Shutter Mount or Outside Shutter Mount?

February 27, 2020

During your in-home shutter consultation, you’ll need to decide how your plantation shutters are installed. You could choose an inside mount, which sits just inside the window recess. Or you can install an outside mount, where your shutter frame is attached outside the window ingress and is hidden by decorative trim.

Sometimes the choice of an inside mount or outside mount is controlled by your window type. But sometimes the choice is yours to match your design palatte. So, when should you install an inside or an outside mount?

When You Should Install an Inside Mount in Your Cleveland Home

Inside Shutter Mount Style

As the name suggests, an inside shutter mount is fastened on the inside of the window panel. Inside mounted shutters use either a Z-Frame or an L-Frame. The Z-Frame is attached inside the frame but has a small lip around the window that gives it a elegant, polished look. An L-frame lies flat to the wall, and doesn’t have any extra finishing trim.

If your window can take an inside mount, the option for this frame option is mostly cosmetic. However, windows that don’t have fairly square corners may want to use with a Z-frame. The overhang on a Z-frame will cover the window’s imperfections. The Z-frame is also wonderful for windows that can tilt. L-frames function best when your window has decorative trim or you want to have a minimalist look for your window.

When You Should Utilize An Outside Mount in Your Cleveland Home

Outside Shutter Mount Style

An outside mount connects onto the wall and drapes over the window frame instead of within it. The mounts are in an L-frame and contains its own trim, so the shutter’s fixtures will still be stylishly hidden. The shutters open and close just like they do with an inside mount, and because of the trim, your guests won’t even see the difference.

If your windows are hollow and lack a thick frame, you will have to install an outside mount. They also are helpful when you need additional decorative trim around the window to help it pop a little more. Many specialty windows with uncommon window frames, like arches or ovals, will require an outside mount, as will shutter treatments for french and patio doors.
