What To Expect At Your Cleveland In-Home Shutter Consultation

March 26, 2019

To help you pick the appropriate window treatments for your rooms, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By taking products to you, we can show you how different window treatments would work in your room. You’ll find how easy it is to discover the best window treatment when you aren’t in the sterile showroom.

But what happens during an in-home consultation? And how can meeting a representative in your home enable you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Every shutter and window treatment company may have a different agenda for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will find during your Sunburst appointment.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

People looking at samples of window treatments.

Start by arranging an appointment by calling your local representative. If you already have a shutter or window treatment in mind, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make sure to bring you some options related to your preferred treatment. We will also bring other options, so you can be sure that your choice matches your ideas.

When we arrive, we’ll sit down and figure out what you are looking for in a window treatment. We’ll spefically ask about your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency needs, and we’ll pay special attention to hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also ask about how the room is used and what style you are looking to accomplish. And it’s fine if you don’t know precisely what you want, as we’ll show you multiple options.

That may require going through different window treatments to discover which treatments fit into your design scheme and work with your windows. Most people should explore a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the best stain to match your color scheme. We’ll also show you all the options available for the covering, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll find precise measurements of your windows. We generally measure the windows in every room in your home—even if you only plan to fit treatments for some of your windows. We perform this service because most of our clients want to be able to order additional products without another consultation. At the end of the appointment, we will thoroughly explain the detailed, written quote, so there are no phantom numbers on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Subpar In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will perform an easy and enjoyable in-home consultation, there are some actions you should never see from any window treatment company. It should go without saying, the quality of the consultation usually equals the quality of the product.

Above all else, your consultant should be careful and professional. He or she should show up on time, with all samples requested, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your representative should always bring product and company brochures and pricing information.

When discussing pricing, you should always get a complete written quote. Don’t accept a large pricing range, scribbled on a product brochure or the back of a business card. And never accept pricing information without window measurement. You want to know how much the final bill will cost you. If an estimate ever seems too good to be true, please ask for references and search for the business’ online reviews.
